Meteor Skyliner. The car that did not exist. The Canadian Ford Fairlane did not have a hard top convertible Skyliner. Gerald McCurry converted his Fairlane to a Redou 500 with the Canadian grill and color scheme.

Peugeot did them beautifully in the 30s 2 models in 1934 and the best in 1938. This is not new, this idea was started in the early 20s.
Get off my car
Stunning.
Could someone make a video with the switches and the internal mechanic
I’ll see if I can eventually make a video like that. Only one button to activate the roof. Push to close and pull to raise or visa versus. And it has 7 electric motors doing to work.
I'm trying to convert a hardtop convertible 08 Sebring to bypass all the computers
Es una joya, toda una historia sobre ruedas, tuve uno de color rojo en los años 70 lo vendí a un coleccionista
Its not a Ford, Its a Canadian Meteor Redoux.
It originally was a Ford. But my dad converted it to a Redoux. The Redoux did not have a hard too convertible. My dad always liked the Redoux front grill better.
@@drmacmike WOW it had me fooled. I should have known as I had never seen one before.
@@PatrickFoley-vf3lr I applaud you noticing that is is a Redoux. That means my dad payed attention to all of the details of making it a Redoux 500. Emblem on the side. Extended trim on the side, hood lettering replaced, and most importantly the front Grill. He had been wanting to to this all of his life.
First time I seen a Meteor Skyliner.
It didn’t exist. My dad made his own. He liked the Meteor front grill way better then the Ford grill. So he made his own.
What A Beauty!
Now THATS a CAR 🥰👍🏁 💨💨💨💨💨💫💨🏁
Such impressive beauty and engineering. Hmm those side rear view mirrors are sweet. I'm guessing they're aftermarket? They look like spot lights AND rear view mirrors in the other side..? Are they both in one? If so that's so bad ass. 2 in 1
Yes they are side mirrors & spotlights are they aftermarket. You can adjust them from inside the car with a handle that tilts and rotates them. Pretty cool.
No tuner technology there boys. That's factory American ingenuity.
A 57 Ford Fairlane 500 w/ convertible hard top, a Continental Kit, wide white wall tires - where’s the blinking curb feelers?
Converted to a Meteor Skyliner which did not exist.
Que cosa mas linda
60 years on and still causing a sensation ! Great to hear the wonderment of the young people. Kind Regards
Thanks Caspa
Canadian! They always take a nice car and ugly it up for some reason nobody can ever explain!
My dad especially liked the V shaped Canadian Grill on the front. So he added it to the United States version.
Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the German Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing petrol stations to only one state operated central gas station per city. From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any more...

soon nobody will remember the days these cars was real on the road
We still drive this one around from time to time.
That rear end longer than the Eiffel tower
Yes it is pretty long. It holds almost the entire top. The top folds back a little so that it will fit.
@@drmacmike looks sick tho
класс! Круто!
Ahead of its time my friend
Yes definitely ahead of its time. It operated on 7 (I think) electric motors to raise the trunk and move the top down into the trunk.
I want one😍😍😍
This one might be for sale soon.
Itsa Canadian Meteor
It is now. But it originally wasn’t. Ford did not make a Meteor Hardtop convertible. Only a soft top convertible. And a hard top non convertible. Thus is a custom converted car. One of a kind. The car that didn’t exist.
You do realize it's a 1957 Ford FairLANE, not FairLAND, don't you?
Oh yes i do. I’ll have to fix that typo. Thanks.
Only real drawback was lack of luggage space. These were made to take on the road, a touring trip, You needed someplace for your luggage--the back seat doesn't cut it.
It's a Canadian Ford, not a Fairlane, but a Rideau. Beautiful, just the same.
Well almost. The Canadian Ford did not have a hard top convertible. But my dad liked the Canadian Grill better. So he converted his Fairlane Skyliner to a Meteor Skyliner Rideau 500 which did not exist. So this is now a one of a kind I guess.
@@drmacmike I stand corrected, and your Dad was a detail guy, for sure. He not only changed out the grille, but the paint scheme and all the Meteor model emblems. It looks great!
@@robertlawrenz3716 thanks Robert. It sure is fun to drive.
1957....and it has a better convertible system than most modern cars today!!!
No it doesn't, when new they were a night mare. 3 years of nothing but greif.
No they were not. They were without electronic and people told me that they were horrible to work on. New one can be reliable, I have a 2007 Daihatsu Copen with a hardtop convertible and never had any problems with it, and most people don't have problems with it either. And people knows how to fix them easy
What's a Daihatsu Copen?
FORD did not do it first. There was a French automaker in the late 20s or early 30s who came up with the retractable hardtop convertible. (it may be here on UA-cam or Google it) Oh, the first American car with this feature; the 1947 Playboy.
Super love that beautiful classy ford
One of the best cars from the 50s man.
is that a 49/50 merc hood ornament ?
That Y-Block needs a solid lifter valve adjust--9 & 19.
Tell me more. This is my dads baby. I will have to let him know so he can have it looked at. What is the Y-Block 9 & 19?
60 years ago I had seen one. Down the street were we lived. It was so cool. I told others about it and everyone thought I was nuts. I am surprised that Chevy didn’t follow suit but they never did to my knowledge.
A neighbor of ours had one in the early 60s. I think they only made them in 57 and 58-?
57, 58, and 59. This one was originally a Ford Fairlane Skyliner. My dad liked the Canadian grill way better. But the Canadian version of this car did not have a hardtop convertible (Skyliner) version. So he modified his and made his own. This is the ‘57 Model.
I am Canadian, and I am looking for a 1959 Ford Skyliner in a two-tone colour such as blue and white or red and white.
Don't tell me you won't run now getting more powerful battery. MR WELSH
It was just a loose connection. We snugged it up by hand and it worked fine.
Beautiful 57 Ford the only thing I don't like which is my own opinion Continental kit. It makes the car look extended and harder to backup and park without worrying about your Continental kit getting damaged put the tire in the trunk in my opinion great deal love the car. MR WELSH
I hate connie kits, but on a Skyliner, the spare is under a trap door under the luggage holder, plus it must be lifted shoulder high to get over the rear fenders, I had a dozen 57-58-59 Skyliners, always had the spare in the trunk, understood when they weren't.
Really glad I stumbled across this.
This is a 1957 Ford Skyliner Convertible Hardtop !! It’s a very beautiful blue and white 2 door !!
Got metor chrome & grill they rare cars metor ford hard to find in salv a ge yards & on the road !!!?? You have to check out the 57, 58 59ford car club !!!?? Hemmings book too
I'm not sure what he is using that pump for that is in the center of the trunk. That isn't factory but this system on these cars work very well once you reseal the hydraulics for the top pumps/
That is an air compressor. So he added an air horn to this car. Even though the factory horn is louder than most modern cars today. So the air horn is pretty loud.
Bom
That’s Not a ‘57 Ford , it’s a Canadian Cousin 1957 Meteor
Well. It is actually a Fairlane that has been converted to a Meteor. The meteor did not have a hard top convertible. My dad liked the Canadian grill better.
@@drmacmike what’s the motor inside the luggage box for?
@@CycolacFan haha. That is an air compressor for the air horn that he added.
Its stock convertible? Or modified?
What’s the $$$$ Price $$$$
Not for sale
Man, would I love one of those!
Very nice car got metor grill side chrome
There's a guy in the Netherlands who hand built a 1958 Edsel Citation Skyliner that had a working retractable hardtop. Of course it was a fake ((built on a 58 Fairlane) but beautifully done, it looked factory!
WoW,difficult to do.Thats a smart man with two right hands🤚🤚
There are a number of 'Edsel' retractables made. Some are really done 'right', but I've seen others which left the Ford 1/4s in place, so it was an 'Edsel' w/fins.
This is a very nice custom job.
Both Ford and Meteors came off the line at Oakville and Sunliners convertibles were a model of both. NO Skyliners Meteors were produced . As to the glasstops. Monarch produce glasstops in 54 and 55 at Oakville Non were built in 56.
Rideau 500 Rideau 500
Meteor sunliners were the only convertible Meteors made. Skyliners were only Ford-based. If they changed the VIN plate at the dogleg to a "made in Oakville, Ontario" Canada element, they may have possibly broken the law. There's a '55 Crown Victoria glass top in the Philadelphia , Pa. area with a Canadian VIN plate which is screwed into the dogleg (as versus being hollow-riveted in), it's also bogus since there were no glass top Meteors made in '55 and '56. Only in '54.
You are correct. This is my dads custom Ford Fairlane Skyliner hardtop convertible. When he purchased his first Skyliner in 1957 he drove to Detroit to pick it up. Then he drove south to go to Canada. (Yes Canada is south of Detroit - look at a map). He liked the Meteor grill better than the Ford grill. I do agree that the Canadian grill is more impressive. So it has always been his dream to customize a Skyliner. He had to customize the side trip as well. Since this video he has added the "Rideau 500" emblem on the side. So this car is really a "one of a kind".
His car is absolutely spectacular. The '56 and '57 Meteors are the best looking Canadian cars produced. He must cause accidents just driving around with people's attention diverted away from the road in front of them and onto his car. Drive it in good health . My ride is a '56 Rideau.
Nice. Do you have a video you can post. Him and I take it to local car shows and parades. He has glass packs on it and a air horn. He has a air compressor in the very limited trunk space for the airhorn. Very fun to drive. Definitely gets the looks. My brother and I let some people sit in it for pictures.
Mike; THANKS for the back-and-forth communication. If you can send me your return path email address, I will send you some pictures of the '56. My actual name is Phil van Leeuwen and someone I used to know went under that name in his favorite bar before the 'net and before he died, told me to carry on the name in his honor in informal settings - to my eternal detriment. I think I'll make your '57 my screen saver - it's so nice.
I think Meteor did offer a real Skyliner on their sales lineup? The conversion is perfect & I Iove the colour combination on this one. Aside from the paperwork (Ford) this is for all intents & purposes a real Meteor then as its only the trim which was different. Impressive!
I would like to see any documentation that they did. My dad seems to think that they had a meteor convertible but not a hard top convertible.
